OBJECT 70 is a 2D installation composed of eleven paintings of various sizes. It reflects Zhang’s contemplation and interpretation of urbanization in the context of Beijing. Over the past few decades, Beijing has undergone dramatic transformations. While the city still preserves its rich history and culture, the colors and vibes of the old city have faded due to rapid urban planning and development. Traditional lifestyles are slowly diminishing, replaced by a greater integration of global cultural influences.
In OBJECT 70, the vibrant organic shapes at the bottom, overlaid by geometric white shapes, symbolize modern structures overtaking traditional buildings. This represents Beijing gradually losing its unique identity and becoming another cosmopolitan city. The rapid urbanization of Beijing serves as a warning, highlighting environmental challenges such as air pollution, traffic congestion, and strain on natural resources.
